Poem
The Motley Patches on My Heart
Alexander Androv
Translated from the Bulgarian · Шарените кръпки на сърцето ми
Something weeps beneath my sweater.
Something drifts upon the wind.
The motley patches on my heart are
memories of my old friends.
One for each I’ve stitched and mended
when I learned that he was gone.
Some of us are old. Some lives have ended.
The embers of our youth - burnt down.
Stitch by stitch. And yes. It aches.
but somehow I believe, forgive me,
that someone, too, will sit for my sake
and stitch a patch onto his own heart.
