And we, you and I, will go and live in Zanzibar.
We’ll happily abandon certain ambitions
and grow addicted to others.
And let the Zanzibaris come to our place.
We are vacating it for them.
It is as fit for a fresh start
as any other.
And when they find their road to happiness
and happily return to their own country,
or set off somewhere else
(wherever the road of their happiness runs),
free of the illusions
of “a better life”,
having understood what
“a nice place” means,
and hooked on
the steady progress
of ants up a little hill,
then it will be easier for us
to have a talk,
over a glass of fragrant wine,
on the veranda of our shared dreams.
