Poem
A Future Conceived
Alexander Androv
Translated from the Bulgarian · Зараждане на бъдеще
Your unknown face will turn
its eyes to me,
and we will see each other for the first time.
And whatever life serves us afterwards —
a brief passing in the tousled air,
some sharp love or leaden hatred.
A twilit contempt
or a red-hot desire for each other’s death,
or some contest in a smiling game.
Envy, perhaps? Or payback for a past betrayal?
Velvet nobility or linen salvation.
Utter oblivion? And more…
But none of it is as full
of future as that first glance.
