Poem
The Four Elements of Wine
Alexander Androv
Translated from the Bulgarian · Четирите елемента на виното
The wine brimmed over.
The foam and the glass — both drunk.
Alone with the thought.
Alone. It’s love
I strain to catch in cupped hands.
The water. It…
Foam scattered in the element’s rush.
Eternal dawn.
Above eternal earth
that clings to my palms.
And the earth, and she.
Stone into sand — poured over.
Hours of dawn.
Eternity and she,
today and now. Here, gathered as one.
A wind blew.
Air — a sigh within the breath.
A sharp caress
cut the thought
in two, and of the two made two new.
Eternity burned out.
And in the fire I found an ember — gone dark.
It caught once more
and blazed up,
beholden to no one.
