Poem
Death of the He-Goat
Alexander Androv
Translated from the Bulgarian · Смъртта на козела
Never has a waiting been so long.
Never have the nights been so still.
I have never once been meek.
No monkish footsteps pace across my yard.
Never has the bell beneath the creature’s beard
rung so sadly in the morning.
I wake — the wind washes me
and ruffles the dead fleece.
