At Least the Trees

Translated from the Bulgarian · Поне дърветата

seek the deep soil
and the water of life
At least the trees of life
close one eye
and turn the other inward
and wake — some in springtime
others in the fireplace
The trees of life
and the firewood for living —
pure chance of the warmth
they take in and give out
at the will of fate
Random are the roots
tangled about the hands
when you plant the tree of life.
