There’s no more time for a walk through the city
and its night rails.

You and I missed each other by a little
and then forever.

Our trains let off grey steam
and their conductors gape at the platform.

No one to see us off either…

You and I didn’t see each other, not for a little,
not forever.

And there’s no more place in the city to return to.
Its cafés smoke like winter, but don’t invite me in.

You and I sold our homes
and staked everything on a journey.

On one for me. Backward.
And on one for you. Upward.
